Explaining Evolution: Darwinian Descent or Detectable Design?

University of Central Arkansas Honors College Press Release

February 24 through March 6, 2003

The theory of intelligent design has recently been proposed as a correction to neo-Darwinian evolution. Its proponents argue that complex differentiation can better be explained by positing a guiding intelligence instead of random variation and natural selection. Its critics have called intelligent design another form of creationism, one that seeks to replace or infuse science with religious presupposition. We explore this controversy by convening a symposium featuring leading voices on either side of the debate, and examine the implications for the science curriculum of secondary schools.
