Metamorphosis: The Beauty and Design of Butterflies
New DVD and Blu-Ray from Illustra Media
Illustra Media has done it again with another blockbuster documentary on intelligent design. If you enjoyed Unlocking the Mystery of Life, The Privileged Planet, or Darwin’s Dilemma, you will LOVE Metamorphosis.
Spectacular photography, computer animation and magnetic resonance imaging open once hidden doors to every stage of a butterfly's life-cycle. From an egg the size of a pinhead…to a magnificent flying insect. It is a transformation so incredible biologists have called it "butterfly magic."
The superbly engineered body of a butterfly is magnified hundreds of times to reveal compound eyes made of thousands of individual lenses, wings covered with microscopic solar panels that warm the insect's muscles for flight, and navigational systems that unerringly guide Monarch butterflies on their annual migration from Canada to Mexico.
How did these extraordinary creatures come into being? Are they the products of a blind, undirected process? Or, were they designed by an intelligence that transcends the material world?
Filmed in the rain forests of Ecuador, Mexico's Trans-Volcanic mountain range, and leading research centers, Metamorphosis is an unforgettable documentary filled with the joys of discovery and wonder. Commentary and insight for the documentary is provided biologists and butterfly experts including philosopher of biology Paul Nelson, Biologic Institute developmental biologist Ann Gauger, and University of Florida zoologist Thomas Emmel.
For decades, the production of wildlife documentaries has been almost exclusively the domain of National Geographic and the BBC (Nova, Nature, etc). Their films are brilliantly produced, with stunning photography and riveting stories. Yet, almost invariably, they are based upon the premise that all life on Earth is the product of blind, undirected materialistic processes. The possibility of intelligent design as a creative agent in nature is either ridiculed as “pseudo-science” or ignored. Metamorphosis presents a fascinating, visually compelling production that will convincingly argue the viability of design.
The difference between this documentary and the previous ones by Illustra Media is that the Butterfly story has the potential to reach a wide audience. As reviewer David Klinghoffer commented: “The other night, I watched the latest production from Illustra Media, Metamorphosis, with our oldest kid, nine-year-old Ezra. Given that he pretty strictly requires that video entertainment involve robots flying around blowing things up, I expected him to scoff at a movie about caterpillars that crawl around, turn into butterflies then proceed to fly to Mexico. Conspicuously, on its remarkable unguided cross-continental journey, the luminous orange-and-black Monarch butterfly fails to blow up anything at all. Yet Ezra sat entranced throughout, as I did, which leads me to think Metamorphosis is going to be a big, cross-generational hit.”
